Foam Engineers is an insulator of new and existing homes. The home, shown below, is located a few blocks west of St Louis Botanical Gardens.
Foam Engineers was contracted to apply open cell spray foam between the rafters and to the underside of the roof deck. Only spray foam, which is air impermeable insulation, is code approved to be installed in this way. Conventional insulation materials such as fiberglass or cellulose are not permitted for this type of installation because air could move through the fiberglass or cellulose insulation allowing the moisture within the air to condense on the underside of the roof deck. Below is a picture of the spray foam being trimmed flush to the rafters…

Foam Engineers trims back excess spray foam insulation from the roof rafters in this unvented attic assembly.
After the foam is installed and trimmed flush to the rafters, drywall will be hung to make the room complete. Insulating in this fashion is analogous to putting a lid on the house. Now the air that is heated in the living spaces below cannot rise and escape to the outside. Instead of being hot in the summer and cold in the winter, the upstairs can now be turned into usable space: it could be used for storage; a playroom for kids; an office; or even a bedroom. What a great way to add value to a home.
